01 — Chemnitz

Why the product passport hits Chemnitz particularly hard.

Hardly any region packs as much manufacturing into such a small space as Chemnitz and the Erzgebirge foothills. Here, the Digital Product Passport becomes concrete in three value chains at once:

  • Machine and tool making: Chemnitz machinery manufacturers are directly affected via their input materials – the act for iron & steel is expected in 2026, aluminium is likely to follow in 2027. Material origin and CO2 data are becoming a supplier requirement.
  • Automotive suppliers: South-West Saxony is one of Europe’s densest supplier regions. In the automotive chain, battery passport, steel and tyre requirements interact – and in our experience, OEM data requests arrive before the law does.
  • Saxony’s textile tradition: From spinning mills to technical textiles: the textile act is expected for the end of 2026/2027, with the obligation from around 2028. Technical textiles and nonwovens should also build up their material and recycled-content data now.

03 — FAQ

Frequently asked questions from Chemnitz.

Do you come to Chemnitz for workshops?

Yes – we are at home in Saxony, the distances are short. Kick-offs, data audits and management workshops take place at your site; ongoing project work is done remotely and keeps the effort small.

We manufacture technical textiles – does the textile DPP apply to us too?

The expected textile act initially focuses on apparel; further textile categories will follow. As a manufacturer of technical textiles you should still build the data logic now: fibre composition, recycled content and chemicals data will be requested by customers and follow-on regulation anyway.

As a supplier we have no end products – why does the passport affect us?

Because your customers can only fill their passports with your data: material origin, CO2 values, substance information. These requirements land on your desk as specifications and supplier assessments – those who can deliver in a structured way secure orders.

From when do Chemnitz companies have to deliver?

Batteries: fixed for 18 Feb 2027. Steel: act expected in 2026, aluminium in 2027, textiles at the end of 2026/2027 with the obligation from around 2028 – each with a transition period of around 18 months. Sourcing the data usually takes longer than the period, which is why an early start pays off.
