DPP software: buy, extend or build your own?

The market for DPP platforms is growing faster than the legal landscape – and every vendor calls itself “DPP-ready”. We consult without licence interests: which solution fits your volumes, systems and budget is decided by hard criteria, not by sales slides.

01 — Options

Three routes to a product passport system.

There is no universally right route – only the one that fits your portfolio, volumes and system landscape.

01

Specialised DPP platform

SaaS solutions with a ready-made registry connection, templates per product group and hosting of the passport data. Strengths: time to market, compliance updates. Risks: running costs per SKU, data sovereignty, vendor lock-in in a young, consolidating market.

02

Extending PIM/ERP

Keep product passport data where product data already lives – and expose it machine-readably via interfaces. Strengths: one data source, no parallel world. Risks: you own the registry API, access rights and hosting obligations yourself (EN 18222/18223).

03

In-house / custom build

For special cases: very high volumes, unusual data models, strict data-sovereignty requirements. Strengths: full control, no per-SKU fees. Risks: standards conformity, maintenance and compliance changes rest entirely with you.

04

Hybrid (the most common real-world case)

Master data in PIM/ERP, publication and registry connection via a lean platform or your own publishing service. Combines data sovereignty with a ready-made compliance layer – but demands clean interfaces. Exactly our craft.

02 — Criteria

How we measure DPP software.

Since the EN standards package of May 2026 these are no longer matters of taste but verifiable criteria:

  • Standards conformity

Identifiers per EN 18219, data carriers per EN 18220, APIs per EN 18222, storage/archiving per EN 18223 – demonstrated, not claimed.

  • EU registry connection

Automated registration via the EU DPP registry’s REST API, EORI handling, GS1 Digital Link – as standard, not as a “roadmap feature”.

  • Integration capability

Clean interfaces to your ERP/PIM/PLM instead of CSV uploads; changes in the source systems must reach the passport automatically.

  • Cost model at scale

What does the solution cost at your real SKU and batch volumes in year 3? Per-passport prices look small and add up brutally.

  • Data sovereignty & exit

Where does the data live, who owns it, and how do you get it back out when switching vendors? In a young market, a matter of survival.

  • Access rights & multi-tenancy

Tiered views (consumer/authority/recycler) and multi-brand capability, where relevant.

03 — FAQ

Frequently asked questions about DPP software.

Which DPP software is the best?

That is the wrong question – there is no universal “best”, only a right fit for your volumes, product group and system landscape. A battery manufacturer with item-level passports needs something different from a fashion brand with model-level passports and 20,000 SKUs. That is why we always start with the requirements profile, never with the vendor list.

Can we not simply map the product passport in our web shop?

No. The DPP requires standardised identifiers, machine-readable formats, tiered access rights, guaranteed availability across the life cycle and registration in the EU registry. A product detail page fulfils none of this – but it can be fed from the same data.

When should we make the software decision?

The requirements profile and the market assessment: now. The contract signature: as soon as the delegated act for your product group finalises the data requirements – then you decide in weeks instead of months. For the battery passport (mandatory 18 Feb 2027) the decision should long since have been made.

What does DPP software cost?

The range spans from a few hundred euros per month for lean SaaS solutions to six-figure enterprise projects. What matters is the model (per SKU, per passport, flat rate) relative to your volumes. We run the scenarios transparently as part of the selection process.
