A widespread misconception first: the Digital Product Passport is not a German topic. The ESPR and the Battery Regulation are EU regulations and apply just as directly in Austria as in Germany – the same deadlines, the same EU registry, the same obligations. For Vienna as a business location, that means concretely:
- Retail & consumer goods: Vienna is Austria’s retail headquarters. Private-label providers count as economic operators placing products on the market, with the full passport obligation; for textiles the act is expected at the end of 2026/2027, with furniture likely to follow in 2028.
- Industry & electrical engineering: The Vienna area is home to electrical-engineering, plant and component manufacturers. For them, the battery passport from 18 Feb 2027 and the electronics requirements expected for 2028–2029 are what count.
- Hub for CEE: Many Viennese companies steer sales and sourcing for Central and Eastern Europe. Anyone importing goods from third countries for the EU region assumes importer obligations – including registration in the EU DPP registry, which launches on 19 July 2026.
- Metal & supplier industry: Austrian suppliers to German OEMs receive steel and automotive data requirements via the supply chain – the steel act is expected as early as 2026.

Yes, without restriction. The ESPR and the Battery Regulation are EU regulations and apply directly in every member state – Austria needs no law of its own for that. Deadlines, EU registry and obligations are identical to Germany; the battery passport takes effect in Vienna too on 18 Feb 2027.
