Why the product passport hits Essen particularly hard.
Few cities embody industrial transformation like Essen – from the coal-and-steel era to an energy and retail metropolis. It is exactly this economic structure that the ESPR targets first with the Digital Product Passport:
- Iron & steel: The Ruhr’s steel and metal heritage lives on in processors, foundries and component manufacturers – and iron & steel is the very first ESPR product group: the delegated act is expected as early as 2026.
- Aluminium & metalworking: For aluminium the act is expected in 2027 – suppliers and semi-finished-product manufacturers in the region should structure their material data now.
- Energy & storage: Essen is home to major energy groups; anyone placing stationary storage or industrial batteries above 2 kWh on the market must deliver the battery passport from 18 Feb 2027 – fixed, not expected.
- Retail & consumer goods: The Ruhr area is one of Europe’s largest retail regions. Retailers and private-label providers share responsibility for ensuring that listed products carry a passport in future.

Does the DPP also affect energy companies and storage operators?
As soon as you place industrial batteries or stationary storage above 2 kWh on the market, the battery passport applies from 18 Feb 2027 – with carbon footprint, raw-material origin and performance data. Even as an operator it pays to look at your suppliers’ obligations.
What does getting started cost?
