01 — Dresden

Why the product passport hits Dresden particularly hard.

Dresden is Europe’s largest microelectronics location – and Silicon Saxony’s value creation runs from the wafer to the finished system. The Digital Product Passport affects the region on several fronts at once:

  • Microelectronics & semiconductors: The DPP requirements for electronics/ICT expected for 2028–2029 hit the entire ecosystem – from chip suppliers to assembly manufacturers to device makers. Anyone designing products today is designing for the passport too.
  • Batteries & energy storage: A battery and storage industry is growing in Saxony. For traction and industrial batteries above 2 kWh the battery passport from 18 Feb 2027 is fixed – the very first hard DPP deadline.
  • Machinery: Dresden’s special-machinery and plant manufacturers are affected via steel and aluminium input materials – the steel act is expected as early as 2026.
  • Data-driven implementation: Hardly any region is better positioned to automate the passport cleanly – from data management to the API connection to the EU registry, which launches on 19 July 2026.

03 — FAQ

Frequently asked questions from Dresden.

Do you come to Dresden for workshops?

Yes, and with especially short distances: we are at home in Saxony. Kick-offs, data audits and management workshops take place at your site; ongoing project work is done remotely.

We manufacture electronics – when does the passport become mandatory for us?

The electronics/ICT requirements of the ESPR are expected for 2028–2029, each with a transition period. Reliably earlier is the battery passport on 18 Feb 2027, as soon as your products contain relevant batteries or you place storage systems on the market. In our experience, sourcing the data takes longer than any deadline.

We are a supplier in the semiconductor cluster – does the DPP affect us directly?

Mostly indirectly, but tangibly: your customers will request material, substance and CO2 data in a structured way to fill their own passports. Suppliers who can deliver machine-readably become preferred partners – those who cannot become bottlenecks.

What does getting started cost?

The first consultation is free; the readiness check is a compact fixed-price package. The further scope depends on portfolio and systems and is quoted transparently after the check.
